This tune is so widespread in America that its origins aren't exactly clear. Printed versions popped up in the early 19th century in Virginia and Kentucky, but the tune was also known in Arizona and Pennsylvania.

Tony Rice recorded a very nice (and fast) bluegrass version of Billy in the Lowground in 1975 that rejuvenated the tune's popularity.

This version is much more timid, more fitting for double C Tuning in my opinion. Hope you like it!
