Wyoming is a land of wide-open spaces and towering peaks. Located in the western U.S., it borders six other states and covers over 253,000 km², making it the 10th largest by area. But it’s the least populated, with just under 577,000 people. The capital and largest city is Cheyenne, founded in 1867 as a railroad town and named after the Cheyenne tribe. It became the territorial capital in 1869 and kept that title when Wyoming joined the Union as the 44th state on July 10, 1890.

Wyoming’s highest point is Gannett Peak at 4,209 meters, part of the rugged Wind River Range. Its state symbols reflect its wild heritage — the American bison as the state mammal, the vibrant Indian paintbrush as the state flower, and rodeo as the official state sport since 2003.

But the biggest claim to fame? Yellowstone National Park. Established in 1872, it was the world’s first national park and still stuns with hot springs, geysers, and mud pots. Over half the world’s active geysers are here, including the famous Old Faithful. And the Grand Prismatic Spring? Its brilliant colors come from heat-loving microbes that thrive in distinct temperature zones.
