Arbab Ahmed, writer, editor, cinematographer and director of the acclaimed documentary 'Insides and Outsides' joins us in this episode of 'Dialogues from the Backstage' during the 10th anniversary edition of the Kolkata People's Film Festival 2024, where the film had its Kolkata Premiere. In conversation with Shreyatama, he candidly shares his journey of making the film, living as a Muslim in an increasingly majoritarian India, mixing the personal and the political on screen, and about being on the streets as a young filmmaker during the momentous protests against the NRC-CAA citizenship matrix in 2019.

During the 10th #KPFF2024, in between film screenings on the big screen, the backstage became a space for some really meaningful conversations. In the second season of 'Dialogues from the Backstage', we were joined by filmmakers who shared their thoughts, experiences and visions with KPFF.

About 'Insides and Outsides'
"Insides and Outsides" unfolds in late 2019, navigating the government's endorsement of discriminatory citizenship laws, imperilling India's Muslim community. Amid a brutal state crackdown on protesting students, Muslim women organize massive gatherings, symbolizing resilience. Filmmaker Arbab grapples with his Muslim identity, probing his parents' contrasting responses to increasing religious discrimination in Ahmedabad and Delhi. Using diverse mediums—home videos, photos, archival footage, and animation—Arbab intertwines personal anxieties with collective religious experiences amid an unceasing pandemic. This documentary illuminates the intricate links between individual struggles and the broader narrative of religious discrimination in India.
