13 FISHING OMEN Panfish & Trout Ultralight Rod [First Impressions]

I first held this rod when it was first being debuted at ICAST last year. I loved the way it felt and looked so I told myself I would pick one up as soon as I could. Finally the time has come... The 13 Fishing Omen Panfish & Trout is definitely a beauty of a stick, but how does it perform?

I picked up the 6'9 model and I have caught several fish on it so far. No doubt it is an ultralight, but they also claim it is a fast action. I don't think I really agree with the fast rating. Sadly, this isn't really exclusive to 13 Fishing. Oftentimes, I find that the longer you go on length, the less fast the rod becomes. This is no exception. I believe the 5'6 rod would be a dynamite rod for panfish and I am willing to bet it will be a true fast action. Sadly, this rod is more of a Moderate Fast, which definitely impacts the way I will use it.

I believe this model will be great for Crappie fishing applications (float rig, suspended jigging, and dock shooting). Additionally, it could probably do well for some float fishing for trout. Otherwise, I don't see this being a rod I will like for sunfish and true ultralight weights. I just think the rod is too noodly and not sensitive enough with micro presentations. Again... I want to be clear that this isn't a problem exclusive to 13 Fishing. I have found this to be the case with a lot of ultralight rod manufacturers. I hope to find a 6'6 or longer rod that maintains a true fast action and good balance with a 1000 size reel someday.
