I-is it over? As the last amulet floats lazily past your face, the ghosts of your former friends dissipate into the cold air, and you notice that Reimu is unnaturally still; her head is hung low, and her hands are motionless by her sides. She floats silently in the air in front of you, and you begin to panic. She said earlier that this last battle could be enough to end her... is she dead? Did you kill her? Oh God...!
"Reimu!" you shout, a mock-grin plastered on your face, "looks like it's my win, eh? My eternal win! That makes you my losing dog forever, Reimu!" You throw back your head and laugh, much too loudly -- it's so obviously fake, even the dumbest of fairies could have seen through it. But Reimu still hasn't moved a muscle -- you're running out of time.
"D-damn it Reimu, if you're my losing dog, then act like it! Act like it and obey!" you throw your hands down in frustration and you're practically screaming, so much that it hurts; your voice is slowly breaking down into sobbing.
"Say something, Reimu!!"
What happens next scares you more than anything has ever done -- more than standing face to face with the devil, more than dancing with death herself, even more than the thought that your best friend could be dead in front of you. No, this is much worse. Reimu's head had jerked back up, and now she was glaring at you, harder than you'd ever seen Reimu glare at anyone. And she was serious. The look she was giving you was sharper than any persuasion needle that had ever been thrown at you, and it was truly frightening.
You knew Reimu personally. Even though she treated everyone with the same cold apathy, you were still closer to her than anyone. You knew how everyone else felt, too. Reimu was the type of person people would include in their horror stories that they would tell at night, and there were many unpleasant rumours about her circling around Gensokyo -- either from people who had only heard fractions of stories about her incident solving adventures, or from the reports those tengu reporters would pull out of the ether and sell off to the interested humans in the village, or the foolish youkai who'd adopted the dirty habit of gossiping. But you knew Reimu, more than anyone else, and despite how scary she could be, she was alright. You'd never seen her be as scary as some of the youkai had claimed she could be, or how ruthless and bloodthirsty the reporters swore she was. No, Reimu was... ordinary. As ordinary as you told everyone you were. And you liked that. You didn't mind that. Reimu was human, like you, and you two were friends.
Yes... friends.
Now, as you stared back at this demon, you believed every word of what everyone had said about her. She was scary, frightening, terrifying, cold, ruthless, cruel... the list went on, and oh how you wished it would stop. This wasn't your friend here in front of you. This was a monster.
"Don't get so excited," she spat. Her tone was monotonous, but hard and serious. No, this wasn't Reimu in the slightest. But deep down, you know this isn't what worried you. You feared that, instead of this being an entirely different Reimu, this was just the Reimu you had been shielding yourself from the entire time. That this WAS Reimu, in her truest form. That thought worried you more than anything.
"Gensokyo is a world in my mind. All you foolish beings inside my world are nothing but being manipulated by me. This world that has not much time left...
If I directly manipulate it, you should realize what happens yourself!"
As the barrage of danmaku begins again, you're determined not to let her win. For the sake of Gensokyo, this victory will be yours!
Goodbye, Reimu!
