Umoja Village, a groundbreaking women-only community in Kenya, was established in 1990 as a refuge for survivors of gender-based violence and a bold rejection of patriarchal traditions. The Umoja model represents a reimagining of societal norms by creating a safe haven However, its existence has not been without challenges, facing hostility from neighboring patriarchal communities and systemic inequalities. Despite these obstacles, Umoja has sparked conversations about gender roles, family structures, and the possibility of replicating similar models elsewhere. This roundtable discussion organised by Nickeled and Dimed’s Gender and Society cluster, will explore Umoja's foundational principles, its transformative impact on gender dynamics, and its limitations, while assessing its role as a catalyst for broader societal change in Kenya and beyond.
