In 1890, deep in a peat bog near Kirovgrad in Russia’s Ural Mountains, miners unearthed a towering wooden sculpture unlike anything ever found.
This is the Shigir Idol — dated by radiocarbon analysis to 11,500 years ago, making it the oldest known monumental wooden artwork on Earth.

Originally standing about 5.3 meters tall, it was carved from a single larch tree that was already over 150 years old when cut.
Its surface is covered in seven stylized human faces, zigzags, herringbone lines, and mysterious geometric patterns.
Scholars believe these markings could represent a mythic story, spiritual map, or a moral code—but the meaning is still unknown.
The idol’s preservation is a miracle: its wood survived thanks to anaerobic peat bog conditions that prevented decay.
