Colombia is the cheapest place to retire and it's next to the United States. You don't have to move across the globe to Thailand or India in order to largely. If your social security is $500, there's no way you can live properly with that in the United States or even Europe. The cost of living in Colombia is very low though and that $500 is enough to rent you a big house, cover all your monthly expenses and have some left to save. If you're retired or will retire soon, moving to Colombia as a retiree is an amazing opportunity in my opinion. Other than the cost of living, the weather and people are also great and you'll be having a great time if moving abroad is not something that scares you.
