Riding toward the airport on Billy Graham Parkway, on this hill, you will see a new broadcasting center by summer. You have never seen one like it.

"Here we've got a unique sandstone which is going to be one of the main features of the building that has flexible iron, and I've looked all over the country, and I haven't found this piece of material before."

"People will notice, they'll notice the flying buttresses out in front of the television station because there are none in Charlotte. And I'll make it a real eye-catching, beautiful building."

Ground was broken not only for Channel 36 is new building, but the adjacent headquarters for the new NBC NewsChannel. In another year, live network reports will come from Charlotte, the winner in intense competition with other cities.
"Having the news service here is going to be just another feather in our cap, and we're extremely, extremely pleased." NBC has always been tied to New York City, until now. "And I said 'We don't need to be in New York. We can be better if we're outside of New York and ironic as it may seem to some people, we can be better in Charlotte, North Carolina than we could be in New York City.'"

"In the movie Field of Dreams, the main character was told over and over again. 'If you build it, he will come.' Well, this is our Field of Dreams. We're building it, and they're coming."

Move-in date for the complex? Next September.
