PALMER, ALASKA! Reindeer Farm and Musk Ox Farm with Kids!

Doodle The Travel Bug drives 45 minutes outside of Anchorage to Palmer, Alaska to visit a Reindeer Farm and a Musk Ox Farm with our kids! Palmer, Alaska is a beautiful and quiet little farming town.
Our first stop is the Reindeer Farm. Our tour started with a 15 introduction about reindeer. We learn what is the difference between reindeer and caribou. Caribou are wild and reindeer are caribou in captivity. So the only real difference is a fence. We get the unique opportunity to hand-feed the reindeer. The kids absolutely loved it.
Our tour guides then introduce us to the other animals that live on the farm. We are encouraged to pet and feed them also! We even got to feed the friendliest moose in Alaska, Rocky!!! And one of the reindeer farms newest resident is a tiny orphaned baby moose, Apollo.

We drive 15 minutes down Old Glen Hwy to the musk Ox Farm. The Musk Ox Farm has been domesticating Musk Ox for over 60 years. The idea is, eventually farmers will be able to own a heard, like alpaca, and raise them for their Quiviut. Quiviut is their soft down that helps them survive cold Alaskan winters.

Both farms make a great day trip from Anchorage! And is highly recommended as "things to do in Alaska with kids"!
