Fuel Tanker Truck EXPLOSION Shuts Down Freeway. This was a job where you wonder how the heck there were no fatals let alone injuries. The semi truck exploded from below, causing the frame itself to burst apart. It's pretty dark, but you can see the separation when Alex inspects it and how huge the gap is.

A huge hazmat job like this has a lot of multi agency coordination due to the inherent danger of the scene. Both fuel tankers were fully loaded, so you can imagine how many ways a job like this can go wrong. Luckily we sent Alex in Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator, to handle the job with the care it needs.

You'll notice right away that once Pepe's is on scene, almost all agencies seem at peace knowing we got the job because they know our reputation and know the job will get done safely and without any further issues. I tried to trim it down as much as possible while leaving the action and explaining, so the hours of standby time in the beginning is cut up. The actual job itself took Alex half an hour, if that.

He decided to use dual spreader bars for maximum control and safety. Spreader bars allow us to lift things like a tanker without crushing the tank itself. Once rigged, Alex rotated to separate the tanker truck from the second tanker, then rotated 180 degrees to place onto the Landoll driven by Castro.

All in all an excellent job, with half a dozen (CHP, Fire Department, County Hazmat, CalTrans, Ocean Blue and the tanker company) agencies working together to clear the freeway fast. What did you guys think of Alex's job?
