"The benefits of this (solar power) station is reducing resources needed for energy by 60%. Our site is a border site that is far away from the national grid, so we used generators in the oil production. So our investment in this station will reduce the material cost of producing one barrel (of oil), this means cost reduction by 60%."

LEADIN:
The Basra Oil Company has completed the construction of the first solar power plant at an oil field to partially run operations using solar energy.
STORYLINE:
The Basra Oil Company is resorting to solar energy to power its oil fields rather than rely entirely on costly, traditional diesel generators.
Rows of solar panels were installed at Al Faihaa oil field, in southern Iraq, where the sun shines bright most of the year.
Iraq is known for its long and hot summers.
The solar energy project was launched in February and it is expected to cover half of the field's energy needs annually.
Apart from lowering the electricity bill, the solar power plant also provides the oil field with a source of green energy.
"Our area suffers from an increase in carbon dioxide emissions... we have reduced toxic emissions in the environment by 60%," says Khalil Nahi Asi, the head of projects production division.
The use of solar power in the oil production industry is still in the experimental phase in Iraq but the manufacturers say their design will make solar technology more economically viable.
Apart from being used for lighting on some of main streets, solar power is rarely used in Iraq.
There is a chronic electricity shortage in Iraq, a country with an aging electricity infrastructure.
In the summer of 2018, Iraq's failing power grid was a key reason behind violent protests in the southern oil-rich province of Basra.
The following year, mass anti-government protests broke out across the capital and Iraq's southern provinces over failed public service delivery, including electricity.
