In this topic we are going to know the history of Somnath Temple which is revered as the foremost among the twelve Jyotirlinga places.

Somnath Temple is located in the Indian state of Gujarat, in the Arabian Sea. It is located on the southwest coast, in the town of Prabhasa Pattinam, in the district of Kirsomnath.

The temple boasts of being the Jyotirlinga and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of the Goddess.  Of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the abdomen of the Goddess is the site of the fallen Shakti Peetha. Once upon a time, Prabhasapattinam was a major port for international trade.

Somnath Temple, located on the west coast of India, boasts of being one of the richest pilgrimage destinations in the world. Prabhasa Pattinam is said to be the holiest place in the Puranas.  By gods like Moon, Sun, Indra, Somnath Temple is a place of worship for the Pancha Pandavas, Lord Krishna, Balarama and numerous Rishis.

In many places in the Mahabharata it is clearly stated that Prabhasapattinam was located at the confluence of the Saraswati River with the sea. When the Pandavas set up the area, they named the area Kusasthali. 

The moon also has another name, Soman.  Itala Eesan is also known as Soma Nathar as it is a place where the moon worships Lord Shiva and removes the curse. The 27 women of Dakshina wanted to marry Chandran, who is the best in beauty.  Chandran was only extremely fond of his last wife Rohini.  Upset by this, the other 26 women appealed to their father, Thaksin, about Moon's discrimination.

   Daksha calls the moon and advises all wives to behave impartially.  But the moon did not care. So Dakshan angrily curses all the arts of the moon to wear off.  The moon according to the curse (the moon with leprosy) The beauty is spoiled.

   Thus the disembodied moon was stunned at not being able to do so. The gods took the moon and went to Lord Brahma and asked for a solution to get rid of the curse.

  He said that the solution to the curse was to bathe in the moon at the Triveni Sangam called Prabhasat Theertham in the state now known as Gujarat, where he established a Shivalingam and fasted to worship Lord Shiva and repent.

Accordingly the moon repented towards Lord Shiva for a thousand years in Somnath.  Eason, pleased with the moon's meditation, appeared before the moon and bestowed grace. 15 days to bless the arts of the moon to wear out and 15 days to grow the arts of the moon. He freed the moon from the grip of the curse.

He also blessed the moon with the power to secrete nectar so that all life on earth could return to normal.He also wore the moon as a crescent moon in his jada hair.

According to the Skanda Purana, the Shiva lingam of the Prabhasa Kandam Somnath Temple is located underground with a radiance similar to that of the sun. It is no exaggeration to say that the Somnath Temple is a symbol of the rise of our Dharma.

பன்னிரண்டு ஜோதிர்லிங்கத் தலங்களில் முதன்மையானதாகப் போற்றப்படும் சோமநாதர் கோயிலின் வரலாற்றை இந்தப் பதிவின் வாயிலாக அறியப் போகிறோம்.

இது தென்மேற்கு கடற்கரையில், கிர்சோம்நாத் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள பிரபாச பட்டினம் நகரில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

ஜோதிர்லிங்கமாக விளங்கும் இக்கோயில், அம்மனின் 51 சக்தி பீடங்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.  51 சக்தி பீடங்களில், தேவியின் அடிவயிறு வீழ்ந்த சக்தி பீடத்தலமாக திகழ்கிறது.
பகவான் கிருஷ்ணர் தனது கடைசி நாட்களைக் கழித்த மற்றும் அவரது அவதாரத்தை முடித்த இடம் இது.
சந்திரனுக்கு சோமன் என்ற இன்னொரு பெயரும் உண்டு.  சந்திரன் சிவபெருமானை வணங்கி சாபம் நீங்கும் தலம் என்பதால் இத்தல ஈசன் சோம நாதர் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.

அழகில் சிறந்தவனான சந்திரனை மணக்க தட்சிணையின் 27 பெண்களும் விரும்பினர்.  சந்திரன் தனது கடைசி மனைவியான ரோகினியை மட்டுமே மிகவும் விரும்பினான்.  இதனால் வருத்தமடைந்த மற்ற 26 பெண்களும் சந்திரனின் பாகுபாடு குறித்து தங்கள் தந்தை தக்சினிடம் முறையிட்டனர்.
தக்ஷா சந்திரனை அழைத்து, அனைத்து மனைவிகளையும் பாரபட்சமின்றி நடந்து கொள்ளுமாறு அறிவுறுத்துகிறார்.  ஆனால் சந்திரன் அதைப் பொருட்படுத்தவில்லை.

அதனால் தக்ஷன் கோபத்துடன் சந்திரனின் கலைகள் அனைத்தும் தேய்ந்து போகும்படி சாபமிடுகிறான்.  சாபத்தின் படி சந்திரன் (தொழுநோய் கொண்ட சந்திரன்) அழகு கெட்டுவிட்டது.

இதனால் உடல் கலைந்த சந்திரன் செய்வதறியாது திகைத்தார்.தேவர்கள் சந்திரனை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு பிரம்மதேவனிடம் சென்று சாப விமோசனம் கேட்டனர்.

தற்போது குஜராத் என்று அழைக்கப்படும் மாநிலத்தில் பிரபாசத் தீர்த்தம் எனப்படும் திரிவேணி சங்கமத்தில் சந்திரனில் நீராடி, அங்கு சிவலிங்கம் அமைத்து விரதம் இருந்து சிவபெருமானை வணங்கி வருந்துவது சாப நிவர்த்தியாகும் என்றார்.

அதன்படியே சந்திரன் சோமநாதத்தில் ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் சிவனை நோக்கி தவமிருந்தான்.  சந்திரனின் தவத்தில் மகிழ்ந்த ஈசன், சந்திரன் முன் தோன்றி அருள் புரிந்தார்

சந்திரனுக்கு அமிர்தத்தை சுரக்கும் சக்தியை அருளினார். மேலும் சந்திரனை தனது ஜடா முடியில் பிறை சந்திரனாக அணிந்துகொண்டார்.
