Fruit flies, phorid flies and drain flies. These pesky insects are most frequently associated with commercial kitchens, food and beverage service areas, food processing facilities and similar commercial accounts.

Small fly control can be challenging since they breed inside the account and have short life cycles. That means they can multiply quickly when the food sources and breeding sites are available.

To successfully control a small fly problem, their larval development sites need to be eliminated. But since these sites are often some distance away from the area where the adult flies are a nuisance, locating them can be difficult.

It is important to note that an effective small fly management program needs to be reinforced by working closely with facility management to identify and address any sites or conditions that could support small flies and other pests.

Using BorActin To Turn Scum Into Bait!

The ideal small fly treatment is to treat the scum and organic build-up they live and breed in with BorActin, an ultra-fine, milled, non-repellent boric acid dust.

BorActin effectively turns the food source for small flies, the scum and organic build-up, into a lethal “bait” that kills adult small flies and small fly larvae.

Borates are water soluble, so BorActin can be applied as a liquid spray, foam or mop solution, though its effectiveness is best when applied as a dust.

As a dust, apply using a bellows or other appropriate duster at the label rate of 1 lb per 1000 square feet to organic build-up in cracks & crevices and void areas to kill adult flies and fly larvae that may be living in the organic build-up. Also apply up to 1 oz to each floor drain.

As a liquid solution, mix BorActin at 4 oz by weight or 1 cup by volume per gallon of water. Mop or spray floors and other non-food contact surfaces to kill fly larvae that may be living in the organic build-up. Remove or brush any visible powder after treatment into cracks & crevices. Up to 1 quart of solution can be poured in each drain.

BorActin can be applied in food areas as a crack & crevice treatment when the facility is in operation, except in serving areas.

Finally, BorActin can be tank-mixed with a microbial-based bio sanitation product such as InVade Bio Cleaner and InVade Bio Foam at the same rate. Add the cleaner to the water first, followed by the BorActin.

Bio sanitation (the use of microbial surface and drain cleaners) is the most effective way to clean in an environment with chronic moisture and organic build-up. The microbes actually digest organic debris.
