Dunnottar Castle is one of most iconic tourist destinations in Scotland, and for a good reason. Cliff-perched ruins of this impregnable fortress near Stonehaven are surrounded by North See from three sides offering a scenic, magical views.
According to the legend, first castle buildings are dated back to 5th century when the St. Ninian found a chapel there, but historic sources are mentioning it from 7th century, when the castle was besieged by Picts. It was extended since, especially between 14th and 16th century. Through most of 17th century the castle played an important role in religious and political events and had been an place where Scottish regalia were hidden from Cromwell's army. In 18th century it had been partially demolished and in 20th century bough over by 1st Viscount of Cowdray, slightly renovated and made available to public. Thanks to the fact that the castle is privately owned, it is available to fly a drone over it (whenever the castle is closed to public) without special permission.
