In part two I dig up an N.C. McKibben Rootstock to transplant to near where the mature plum seedling was. N.C. McKibben is a chickasaw plum (Prunus angustifolia) cultivar which originated in the North Carolina during the colonial period. It was transported by covered wagon to Mississippi by the McKibben family shortly after the Civil War. Suckers from the strain were made commercially available by an orchardist and nurseryman by the name of Larry Stephenson who is a descendent of the Mckibbens. I'm not crazy about the fruit of N.C. McKibben and have grafted my original tree over to Robusto. But it makes a fabulous rootstock because it seems to pretty bullet proof to most stem and root issues and makes a huge root system and trunk.

The root system of this particular plant was much bigger and better developed than I was expecting. But I see that as even more evidence for why I think N.C. McKibben is a fabulous rootstock for plum, at least for my climate and soil conditions.
