Kazan Cathedral (Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God) is one of the largest churches in St. Petersburg. It houses an icon of the Kazan Mother of God. The temple is located at St. Petersburg, Kazanskaya square, 2 near the Nevsky Prospekt subway station.
The temple was built on Nevsky Prospekt from 1801 to 1811 by architect Andrey Voronikhin in the style of Russian classicism. After the Patriotic War of 1812, it acquired the significance of a monument of Russian military glory. In 1813, the commander Mikhail Kutuzov was buried here and the keys to the captured cities and other military trophies were placed.
The main difficulty in the design was that according to the church canon, the main facade and the entrance to the temple should be on the western side, and the conditions of the plan — the direction of the future construction to Nevsky Prospekt, required the disclosure of the composition to the north. Voronikhin solved this problem by decorating the square facing Nevsky Prospekt with a semicircular colonnade.
The interior of the St. Petersburg Kazan Cathedral is more like a hall in some royal palace than a church room in the usual sense. If it were not for the rows of tall granite columns that unite the space of the hall, it could seem endless. The interior of the Kazan Cathedral is a majestic 3-nave columned hall (the length of the main nave is 69 m), containing rows of 56 columns of pink Finnish granite with gilded capitals.
The main shrine of the temple is the venerated image of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. She has been in it since 1811. After its closure in 1932, the icon was saved and after staying in other temples of the city in the late 1930s, it was moved to the Prince Vladimir Cathedral on the Petrograd side. In 2001, the icon was returned to the Kazan Cathedral and installed to the left of the Tsar's Gate. You can take a closer look at the famous icon of the Kazan Mother of God. However, we will have to be patient to wait for our turn – there are no fewer pilgrims to it in our time.
Both believers and tourists note that, having entered the temple, they have a feeling of calm and peace, all worries seem to remain outside its threshold. Many are sure that the influence of the holy walls makes itself felt, over the long period of the cathedral's existence, which absorbed the energy of different times and sincere, heartfelt prayers of believers.
