Wear It!

It’s finally that time of year where we will see many of you out in the parks and on the water all around Allatoona Lake. This year, Park Rangers at Allatoona Lake and Safe Kids want you to Wear It! Wear what you might ask? Your Life Jacket, of course!

Last year there were five water-related fatalities on Allatoona Lake. This year, we want all of our visitors to play smart and leave alive. One way to play smart is by wearing a Life Jacket.

Join us! On Friday, May 15, Park Rangers and Staff at Allatoona Lake will be sporting our most comfortable Life Jackets for “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day”. This is an annual event hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available, and demonstrate their comfort and versatility by wearing them to work. We invite you to join us by Wearing YOUR Life Jacket to Work on Friday, May 15, and encourage your friends, family and co-workers to do the same! Take pictures and share them with us on the US Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, Allatoona Lake Facebook page.

What if you don’t have a Life Jacket? If you come to visit Allatoona Lake and you forget your Life Jacket, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered! All areas managed by the Corps of Engineers have Life Jacket Loaner Stations provided by Safe Kids Cobb County and Safe Kids Cherokee County. Some of our unmanned areas have orange Life Jackets hanging on a loaner board. Just take one, wear it, and return it when you come off the water. You can also borrow a Life Jacket at most of our gatehouses, just ask the park attendant how!

What else can you do to “play smart and leave alive” this summer? Just follow these tips for a safer summer!

Never swim alone.
Swim in designated swim areas.
Never dive or swim in unknown waters.
Be aware of underwater hazards such as stumps, rocks or other objects.
Obey all posted signs, markers and navigational aids.
NEVER drink and boat.
