German Engineer Anton Hammel attended the trade & industry college in Munich & joined the locomotive factory J. A. Maffei in 1875, there he rose from designer to Managing Director, his constructions established the worldwide reputation of the company, his first significant construction was the heavy four-coupled articulated locomotive developed for the Gotthard Railway in 1882, which was then followed in 1890 by a six-coupled locomotive also for the Gotthard Railway. The S 2/6 set a speed driving record in 1907, he then designed the S 3/6, he designed locomotives for Maffei with newer features – the adoption of bar frames, long wide fireboxes, four cylinders drove the second coupled axle, with the two inside high-pressure cylinders set at a slight inclination, the two outside low-pressure cylinders set horizontal.
