Italian ATK are working with their CNC-machines to produce solid tech bindings. For next winter, they have updated their popular tech binding Freerider 14 2.0 (which was new for this winter 18/19) and presents the "FR 14 "which, in general, will probably be called Freerider 14.

But enough about the name! The news is that the brake has been moved to the heel part, the toe part has been slimmed in weight and should be safer against snow and ice, and now has an adjustment in 3 different positions for the position of the pins in terms of the hardness of the pins towards the boot. This is for uphill mode only, and should grant great fit no matter what tech inserts you´ve got.

The heel section still has 8 mm elasticity in the longitudinal direction, 5 different positions for the heel height walking upwards (completely flat, 38mm, 41mm, 48mm and 58mm). Ski tops are available from 97 - 120mm. New plates "spacers" make you stand more stable and wider with the heel against the binding and not hanging in the tech pins. Spacers and brakes also have sliding plates to ensure release even if great pressure is applied to the ski (eg after jumps or similar).

The release value can be set from 8-14 and the weight of one binding is 360 grams including everything, very light compared to all tech competitors with the similar release value (RV). The price is 595 €.
The small sibling in the series will be FR 12 which has a RV of 5-12 and costs 555 €.

Davide, who is part of the owner family in ATK, also says that the previous project "Powster" which was showed at ISPO last winter 2018 is closed due to patent reasons, and instead a new project has been launched to develop a light, strong and safe alpine touring binding (think Salomon Shift-style). But Davide also says that this is a long-term project and a complicated process.

At worlds biggest sports fair ISPO in Munich we check out all the new ski stuff for winter 2019/2020. This video was the very first one recorded at ISPO in Februrary 2019, but our total playlist includes over thirty videos:    • 8 Best Ski Products 2020 - ISPO preview
