You’ve probably heard this before…
"If you upload your photos to social media… they own them."
Yeah… that’s not true.
But I get why people believe it…
because the fine print on social media platforms reads
like it was written by attorneys who bill by the syllable.
Here’s the reality…
When you upload a photo, video, or post… YOU still own it.
You still hold the copyright.
The platform does not suddenly become the photographer, artist, or creator.
But… and this is where people get confused…
You do give the platform permission to use your content.
Think about it.
Without that permission… social media literally couldn’t function.
They wouldn’t be able to display your post, show it in feeds, recommend it, or even store it.
That permission is called a license.
And most platforms make that license worldwide, royalty free,
and transferable inside their ecosystem.
That means they can display your content… promote it… resize it…
or even use it to market their platform.
What they generally can’t do…
is sell your photo like stock photography… or claim they created it.
Now here’s the part nobody talks about…
The bigger risk usually isn’t the platform.
It’s other users.
Screenshots… reposts… fake accounts… content scrapers…
those are usually the ones stealing content.
So here’s the simple rule I tell clients…
If you wouldn’t be comfortable seeing something shared widely…
saved permanently… or taken out of context…
Don’t post it publicly.
Because social media isn’t temporary.
It’s searchable… screenshot-able… and pretty close to forever.
And maybe… just maybe… reading terms of service once in a while isn’t the worst idea.
