Day Road Trip into the New Zealand Mountains

Welcome back to our Sixth Series! For Episode 4 we will be sharing our road trip into the New Zealand Mountains.

We headed into the mountains but on our way we first stopped off at Sheffield (New Zealand town) to try a pie at the World Famous Sheffield Pie Shop, which was something of a local delicacy. We went for both a Beef pie and Chicken pie, which were both delicious.

Once we were all fuelled up we headed back on the road again, taking in the gorgeous mountain views and windy roads which were enough to make the day special on their own.

After an hour on the road, we finally made it to Castle Hill. Not only were the views spectacular from here but this grand limestone rock configuration was also fun to climb and explore. It was also used as a backdrop for the battle scene in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe.

Once we had ventured round Castle Hill we took off again towards Arthurs Pass, this alpine village is home to Kea, native birds that will have your lunch given the chance. We stopped off at Arthur's Pass Cafe & Store for a coffee and a snack before heading back. Unfortunately we didn't see any Kea but we could hear them.

On our way back we stopped off at Lake Pearson. This beautiful lake was a great way to end the trip, enjoying the sun set hitting the surrounding mountains was very peaceful and we would definitely recommend visiting if you're visiting Arthurs Pass. There is also a campsite by the side of the lake if you are travelling by camper.

As we headed back through the mountains the sun was setting and the sky looked incredible. We absolutely loved the day exploring the mountains and will be back to try and spot some Kea.
