This peril stems from the excessive extraction of groundwater, leading to the city's subsidence, exacerbated by the rising sea levels associated with global warming.

The Indonesian government's response to this issue has included the construction of a massive sea wall. However, these solutions are fundamentally unsustainable. As the land continues to subside, the water barriers will eventually collapse.

An alternative strategy involves relocating the capital, but it is unclear whether they can do it in time.
