In 1909 Ejnar Mikkelsen sailed the tiny Alabama to Greenland to recover the missing Danmark Expedition records that proved the island was one landmass and therefore belonged entirely to Denmark. When pack ice later crushed the ship and the crew evacuated, only Mikkelsen and 23-year-old mechanic Iver Iversen were still inland; they returned to wreckage, built a 16-by-10 foot shack from the timbers, and began an 865-day battle with starvation, polar bears, and creeping madness while guarding the documents three men had died to secure.
Their sledge journey north killed the dogs one by one, left Mikkelsen bleeding from scurvy, and forced Iversen to harness himself in front to drag the leader and the tube of maps across collapsing leads and new ice that cracked like rifle shots. At one point Iversen plunged into Arctic water and survived only because Mikkelsen cut him free and raced a tent up in minutes; later a passing ship failed to notice their frantic smoke signals, condemning them to a second winter in the Alabama Cottage.
They named lemmings in the walls, raised a fox called Prut, burned ship planking for heat, and joked about eating each other rather than cross the last moral line; yet when rescue finally came in July 1912 aboard the Sjøblomsten, the Danmark papers were intact under layers of canvas and seal fat. Two human ghosts stepped aboard to a heroes welcome that secured Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and gave the world one of the rawest survival stories ever written.
