Wewa - Are we going to turn a blind eye, while it gets destroyed.

It has been confirmed that Wewa is an endemic creation of Sri Lanka.

This is reaffirmed by the fact that there is no specific word to describe this creation in the English language. Although words like Tank and Lake are used to describe this creation in English, Tank means a container for storing water while a Lake would simply mean a pond.

This proves that the West was not aware of this magnificent creation - Wewa.

Moreover, while in the rest of the world, civilizations were established near river valleys, we are the only nation where civilizations were established surrounding Wewa.

It is disheartening to realize that this significant and endemic creation which clearly showcased our very own heritage and sophisticated technology of our ancestors, has now been forgotten and destroyed.

We at News 1st in collaboration with the University of Peradeniya are ready to go on a quest in search of what caused the destruction of Wewa.

What functions are fulfilled by the main components of the Wewa?

Although a Wewa may simply seem like a structure designed and constructed to store water, it is in fact a much sophisticated creation with many complex components of its own.

The functions carried out by each of these components are truly mindblowing.

1. Waa-kanda

Waa-kanda is the bank of the wewa. It is this component that helps store water inside the Wewa.

2. Biso Kotuwa

Biso Kotuwa is perhaps the most significant component of a Wewa. This structure can only be seen in massive Wew. Bissa in sinhala means something that is used to store things. Accordingly, the part where water gets deposited is known as Bissa and hence it is a square shaped structure, it is called Biso Kotuwa. The function of this component is to make sure that the pressure excerted on the Waa-kanda or the bank of the wewa, when water flows out of the Wewa through the sluice gate, is reduced.

3. Mud Sluice Gate

The water stored below the Pita-waana which is mixed with mud and heavy metals, will be carried out of the Wewa through the Mud Sluice Gate. This struture prevents Water mixed with heavy metals from being drained to agricultural fields.

4. Katta-kaaduwa

Katta-kaaduwa is kind of a marsh with plants such as Watakeiya, Cane and Kumbuk which can strongly absorb heavy metals.

5. Gas Mandiya

This is the structure located above the Wewa. This is the component that nourishes the Wewa, this is sort of a forest area of a couple of acres, with fountains and small wewa cluster. This is also known as Gas-gommana.

There are more significant components of this amazing structure, the Wewa.

Even experts in the West have been amazed by this hydraulic technology. The fact that there exists no reports of such a great hydraulic technology in any other country, proves that Sri Lanka was a rich nation with a well developed technology.
