MAGNIFIKAT
Ily Matthew Maniano

This story from the gospel of St. Luke is one of faith, especially of Mary who, despite her doubts, questions and uncertainty, rejoices in being chosen to give birth to the promised Messiah. The Latin translation of Mary's response begins with the word Magnificat, which means magnify or glorify. It is poem of praise to God, praising Him for blessing Mary and for His faithfulness to Israel.

We sing to you this choral setting of Magnifikat by Ily Matthew Maniano, with the composer using both Latin and Filipino texts and incorporating as well wooden blocks and drums to embellish the piece with percussive patterns that are common in the Southern part of the Philippines. This aims to marry and to give us a delicate balance of the Western and Filipino influences of the piece.
