(Jan 21, 2023) - Rest In Peace to the voice of the Portland Trailblazers, Mr. RIP CITY himself, Bill Schonely (aka The Schonz). Bill lived an inspiring, fruitful life to the ripe age of 93, and he will be missed by many. 👑
I had the honor of attending a dinner with Bill a few years ago, and I feel like every Oregonian should be enlightened to who this man was, and what he contributed to the city of Portland.
Bill was a wise, sharp, fascinating, inspirational man, and a true, genuine, living KING. Amongst Bill’s many accomplishments in sports broadcasting, and all of his admirable philanthropy work, we’re also talking about the man who literally coined the term “Rip City”. It doesn’t get much more Portland than that!
Schonely is probably the most famous and beloved broadcaster in Portland history, and he was the Blazers official play-by-play broadcaster for its first 28 years, before moving into an ambassador role for the team. Bill officially retired in June of 2022 after 52 years with the organization.
Thank you for inviting me to that dinner @realbusyperson. It’s not every day that you get to sit at the Kings table and break bread with Portland royalty. I appreciate the opportunity, and I’m grateful to have been included. It was an honor to be surrounded by such great people, and a lifelong memory to be cherished. Condolences to Bill’s loved ones. Bingo-bango-bongo, lickety-brindle-up-the-middle! RIP Mr. RIP CITY. 🙏
