[Art/ Song - Analysis] written by Mark Kaschak
------the designer of the picture itself / my former high school teacher in 11th and 12 grade:

"Lighting

Both faces are against a black backdrop, indicating the dark subject matter in the song and the darker parts of each person’s mind/life experiences. Both faces are lit from only one side which represents the “light” and “dark” side, as everyone has both. Secondarily, it represents our desire to be cast in a good light (ie, “get my good side” when having our picture taken, or our reputations in society). The “dark” side is what “comes between” the two faces/people in the image, and is also (in the real world) what was often shared between them, rather than each offering their “light” side to the other. Additionally, Grant’s face is much lighter than Mark’s, representing Grant’s ever-present candor and honesty with his struggles as opposed to Mark’s past of cowering from that honesty with himself and his own struggles/shortcomings.

Texture

It’s clear that the texture over Grant’s face is chaotic and disorderly, representing again his candor and honesty with his struggles. The texture over Mark’s face, however, seems more orderly and intentional at first glance. When viewed closely, it’s clear that Mark’s texture is no less chaotic, suggesting that he too has struggles regardless of how he chooses to present himself to the world.

Facial Expression

Grant looks the viewer in the eye, again indicating his direct communication with the listener. Mark, however looks sideways with an expression that could be interpreted as either suspicious of Grant (indicative of the past) or guilty of his past judgements (indicative of the present). Mark’s eyes have moved away from Grant, suggesting both that he never looked closely enough to understand him, and that he needed to eventually take a step back to see who he truly is.

Text

The text is interpreted in two ways. The track’s title, If I Really Try is represented by color, with the text color changing between white and grey for each new word. A second meaning is represented by the alignment of the letters, which changes from left to right between each new word to spell, I Fire Ally Try. This represents the fact that Mark’s fire (mistakes, shortcomings, etc) were oftentimes directed at his ally (Grant), as “fire” is closer to Mark and “ally” is closer to Grant. Fun fact: The text is in Century Gothic font, which was Mark’s favorite font while he was Grant’s graphic design teacher."
