The Northern Medical Program is celebrating a significant milestone. In January 2005, the very first medical students began their careers in the newly-created program. When it was created a decade ago, it was the first of its kind in terms of technology. Since its launch, the Northern Medical Program has expanded its annual intake from 24 to 32 students, the maximum it can handle. One of the speakers was Dr. Heather Smith, of the Class of 2008. She is now practicing in Prince George, as are roughly 30% of graduates. She says she was stunned to realize a decade had passed since she first set foot in the new medical school. She says, unlike other medical schools, the community welcomed the students with open arms. Now, she says she looks forward to becoming the teacher over the next decade and beyond.
