On the morning of November 12, the Taosi Site Museum, located in Xiangfen County, Linfen City, Shanxi Province, officially opened to the public. Covering an area of 74.4 acres with a building area of 9,998 square meters, the museum has two floors.
The exhibition design is themed "The Light of Nature and Civilization" and includes three main display units: "Cultural Accumulation," "Brilliant Capital," and "Early States." Additionally, there are two special exhibitions titled "Taosi Archaeology" and "Temporary Exhibitions," as well as one immersive digital exhibition. The exhibition features over 230 artifacts, primarily including pottery, bronze items, wooden objects, and jade artifacts, covering all categories of Taosi culture. It particularly highlights recent archaeological discoveries and unearthed relics related to the palace city and palace area. The highly anticipated painted dragon plate and the previously undisplayed ruler and the first jade pendant from prehistoric Shanxi are all on display.
The Taosi site is a large settlement site from the late Neolithic period in China, dating back approximately 4,300 to 3,900 years, and is the namesake of "Taosi Culture." The current area of the Taosi site is about 4 million square meters. To the east lies the Chongshan Mountain range (commonly known as Ta'er Mountain), while approximately 7 kilometers to the northwest is the Fen River, presenting a unique landscape embraced by mountains and water.
The newly completed Taosi Site Museum has a total investment of about 330 million yuan. The entire building is based on elements symbolizing "The Capital of the Earth in the Middle Kingdom," with an exterior design that resembles the character "中," symbolizing the important support that Taosi archaeological discoveries provide for understanding the origins of Chinese civilization.
Exhibits such as multi-faceted jade ornaments, painted coiled dragon-patterned pottery plates, bronze toad ornaments, turquoise-inlaid wrist ornaments, painted lacquerware, and bone mouth harps are prominently featured. Utilizing light and shadow along with digital technology, the museum presents a panoramic display of Taosi's outstanding achievements in urban planning, handicraft manufacturing, and artistic creation. This serves to vividly showcase significant archaeological research findings from the Taosi site while further presenting the origins and development processes of Chinese civilization and providing an important platform for exploring early state civilizations.
