In 1979, film makers in London, England set out to make a documentary series spotlighting the folk music of Appalachia. Research into the legends and lore of Appalachian music led them to the Smithsonian Institute’s Center of Archives.
There, the film’s producers discovered a recording of a song entitled “Send An Angel By My Way”. This particular recording was Rev. Joe Freeman performing his song live in Washington D.C. at the Smithsonian Institute’s Folklife Festival on October 9th, 1977.
The producers immediately became intrigued and proceeded to bring their film crew to Wise County, VA. Reverend Joe’s contribution to music and ministry was already a part of Appalachia’s legacy, but now it would be introduced to the world.
