You will have heard words like bubbly, bright, mellow, sweet and the like thrown around when describing the tonal properties of Koa but how do 7 of the most popular Koa Tenor Ukuleles we sell stack up and which one captures your imagination?

The Martin T1K is the most affordable being Mexican made and about half the price of its Hawaiian K brand counterparts. The name Martin means a lot to people and the T1K is very much Martins baby steps into the world of Tenor Ukuleles.

The Ana'Ole AT Koa is manufactured in Pearl City, Hawaii by Gareth Yahiku. The Ana'Oles are a perfect example of a small operation workshop Ukulele and have a very traditional flavour with the light gloss finish and historical appointments like tye on bridge and 3 point crown. The Ana'Ole may not have the sheen and shimmer of the more well known Hawaiian K brands but much like the Martin - it's about half the price so deserves some lee-way.

The Romero Creations Replica is a Vietnamese recreation of Pepe Romero jr's US made custom models. Available in Mango, Mahogany and Koa - the Koa model has always been the one people get most excited about and we love it because it gives you lots of the high end cosmetic features and planetary tuners for around the same price as a basic Kamaka, KoAloha or Kanile'a.

The KoAloha KTM-00 is the most unique design in todays video - it also has one of the biggest and most bombastic sounds. KoAloha tend to use slightly plainer looking Koa but the sound is up there with anything at any price.

The Kamaka HF-3 is steeped in tradition and holds its own against its current contemporarys very well. If you want a satin finish, traditional spec and one of those ukes that definitely lives up to the 'bubbly' 'mellow' and 'sweet' description people like to use then this is always a safe choice.

The Kanile'a K-1 is the most modern in design - it features Kanile'as innovative touch relief bracing (light bracing with minimal contact and weight reduction) and the UV gloss is just perfect every time. Kanile'a also benefit from having some of the worlds prettiest Koa.

Finally, the Ko'olau T-1 is the newest addition to the Southern Ukulele Store. Ko'olau Ukuleles are the Hawaiian custom shop relation to the popular Pono Ukuleles and this traditional spec Tenor Ukulele feels precise and refined whilst also having the open, classic airy sound one would want from a Koa Tenor.
