In the Victorian era, men with large mustaches often used special "mustache cups," which had a built-in guard to prevent their facial hair from getting wet.   Invented in the mid-19th century by British potter Harvey Adams, the mustache cup was a direct response to a Victorian grooming dilemma. The design incorporated a semicircular ledge, or 'mustache guard,' inside the rim with a small opening, allowing a man to drink hot liquids without his mustache touching the beverage. This protected the popular waxed mustaches from drooping or melting.

These cups were produced widely across Europe and America by renowned manufacturers like Meissen and Limoges, crafted from materials ranging from everyday earthenware to fine porcelain and silver plate.
