Gunther Werks F-26: The 1,000 HP Air-Cooled Porsche That Redefines Restomods
At Monterey Car Week, enthusiasts witnessed some of the rarest and most jaw-dropping cars on the planet, but one particular debut stole the spotlight—the Gunther Werks Project F-26. Known for pushing the boundaries of Porsche restomods, Gunther Werks has once again redefined what’s possible with the iconic 911. And this time, the company has created what many are calling the most insane air-cooled Porsche ever built.
The F-26 arrives alongside the ultra-rare GWX, but unlike the one-of-three special edition, the F-26 will see a “larger” production run—though only 26 units will be made. Exclusivity remains at the heart of this project, ensuring that only a handful of collectors will ever get the chance to experience this monster of a car.
Inspired by Porsche’s legendary Slantnose models, including the 936 Slantnose and the iconic 911 Slantnose, the F-26 is designed to mimic the aerodynamic profile of a fighter jet. This makes it radically different from other Porsche restomods like those from Singer, which tend to focus more on heritage preservation. Gunther Werks instead aims to combine the timeless silhouette of the 911 with hypercar-level performance and extreme aerodynamics.
At the core of this wild machine sits a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter, air-cooled flat-six engine, co-developed with Rothsport Racing. It produces a mind-bending 1,000 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque. For context, that’s hypercar territory, all from an engine rooted in classic air-cooled Porsche DNA. This engine isn’t just powerful; it’s a technical marvel, featuring a race-derived flat fan that provides over double the cooling capacity of a conventional vertical fan. Supporting hardware includes a carbon fiber airbox, redesigned intercooler plenum, and integrated blow-off valves, all engineered for maximum performance and durability.
Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential—an old-school purist setup designed for the ultimate driving engagement. With such insane output, Gunther Werks equipped the F-26 with serious hardware: massive Continental ExtremeContact Force tires—295/30 up front and 335/30 at the rear—paired with a double-wishbone front suspension, adaptive JRZ dampers, advanced traction control, and a wheelbase extended by 30 millimeters for added stability.
Aesthetically, the F-26 is an absolute stunner. Its bespoke front fascia features unique headlights, a grille inspired by the modern 911 GT3, and aggressively flared wheel arches. Around back, a sweeping LED light bar, an enormous carbon fiber wing, and a custom diffuser transform the rear profile into something both futuristic and menacing. Almost every exterior component is crafted from carbon fiber, keeping the curb weight down to just 2,700 pounds. That’s remarkably light for a car with 1,000 horsepower, ensuring an explosive power-to-weight ratio.
The interior is just as special as the exterior. Gunther Werks has gone for a fully bespoke design, featuring a carbon fiber dashboard, luxurious leather seats, and Alcantara lining across the headliner. This blend of modern materials with racing-inspired touches creates a cockpit that feels like a perfect mix of luxury and motorsport.
Ultimately, the Gunther Werks Project F-26 isn’t just a restomod; it’s a statement. It takes the essence of the classic Porsche 911, merges it with extreme engineering, and transforms it into something that rivals the most exotic hypercars in the world. With only 26 units ever to be built, the F-26 is destined to become a legend among collectors and Porsche purists alike.
