Описание к видео Figura Avatar Showcase: Minimap & Block Colour Picker

A world of colour!

My minimap is called Figmap, it's taken me over a year to get where it is now, especially with its level of optimisations. Lua is fast, but it's way slower than Java, and it's a miracle I was able to get it running in real-time!

Figmap loops over all the blocks near me, and runs a custom function to get their top colour. This averages the colour of the top face of their block texture, applies biome tints, and filters out some unnecessary blocks. For water, I manually darken it based on depth with an algorithm similar to what Minecraft uses, which I think looks really good!

It's fast enough to load chunks in real-time at max Creative flight speed. You'll see some black areas generating in the video. I use a little hack to update chunks—since it's impossible to redraw the map every frame, I rely on sound events (block placed/broken) to tell the map when to redraw areas.

The colour picker uses Figmap (as do other parts of my avatar like the particle world from a previous video) due to its speed and ability to average the colours of block textures. I get a list of all blocks, then average their textures. I can then find the closest ones to the target colour, and display those blocks at the top.

I have a custom oklab library which I use to compare the colours, for maximum precision. I do have to do some preprocessing as Figura would struggle with that many comparisons every frame, but I think the end result is nice!

Ooh yeah and here's an explanation about Figura if you're new to it. It's a mod where you can create a custom avatar with Blockbench models and Lua scripts, genuinely anything you think of is probably possible. I've spent the last three years creating my avatar, and I'm pretty proud of it!

The Avatar Showcase series will focus on my avatar, specifically its interactions with the environment. Figura has many functions designed to get nearby blocks, check fall distance, get block data, etc., which I use to great effect.
