MY PUP CAME HOME FROM CLAEDEACH

My pup came home from Claedeach today and I am glad of it,
Con Carty did not trate him as dacent as he promised it.
Do bhíodh sé moch is déanach ag aoireacht na seascaithe*,
Is do thinneadar a mhéaranna is a ghéaga bhoga a bhascadar,
Is nach mé a bhí go mórálach nuair a tháinig sé abhaile chugam.

And if you were to see him 'twas really astonishing
How little time a sheepdog without feeding would be vanishing.
Bhí slabhra ó Inse Cóir air ná raibh dóite ná cnagaithe
Gan casadh san éagóir air ná orlach de lagaithe
Is nach mé a bhí mórálach nuair a tháinig sé abhaile chugam.

And he was so very homesick his throat got sore with sadness,
One morning 'ere they woke, sure his chain he broke with madness
Do ghearr sé trí na cóngair, le breoiteacht do chneadadh sé
Trí ghleanntaibh is trí mhórchnoic ba dhóigh leat ná stadfadh sé
Is nach mé 'bhi go mórálach nuair a tháinig sé abhaile chugam.

He was so very lonesome and the bones were poking through his skin,
And that being somewhat torn, it could do no more than keep them in
Do bhí sé tuirseach tnáite gan áthas ná dúil i meidhir,
Ba dhóbair dó bheith báite is é ag gabháil trí Átha Chúm a' Ghadhair
Is nach mé 'bhi go mórálach nuair a tháinig sé abhaile chugam.

His feeding whilst out there was small praties mixed in stirabout,
He could run all over Claedeach with forty of them in his mouth.
Ní raibh siúl ná slí aige, a chroí ina chliabh bhí ataithe-
A chosa bhí tanaí is a phíb a bhí greadaithe,
Is nach mé 'bhi go mórálach nuair a tháinig sé abhaile chugam.

And his adventures while out there they will yet go down in history,
And how he got away it will always be a mystery
Bhí bacach darbh ainm Páinseach nuair a dhearcaigh sé an seiceadúir D'ardaigh suas a málaí is as go brách go Cnoic an lúir,
Is nach mé 'bhi go mórálach nuair a tháinig sé abhaile chugam.

And those bleak and barren ranges of Claedeach they are horrible,
A vast three thousand acres, with scarce an acre arable.
Níl ann ach aiteann gaelach, fraoch agus portaithe,
Is da mbeifeá amuigh ann déanach, ba bhaolach duit bheith gortaithe,
Is nach mé 'bhi go mórálach nuair a tháinig sé abhaile chugam.

Seascaithe = seascacha = ba seasca
