Описание к видео Bill Henry shares his story: direct action in Polaris anti-nuclear demonstrations in 1960 (pt.1)

Bill Henry —'The Whale-rider' recounts his time on the frontlines of the anti-nuclear struggle. Best known for his triumphant climb on top of a submarine with a sign reading "No Nukes"— he is a gentle warrior of the way of peace who was subsequently sentenced to serve a year in prison.

Around 21min in, he describes the context of the election between JFK & Nixon, the cold waters and the actual events which led to Bill taking his place in the history of nonviolent direct action. Then we hear about more of his back-story and what it was like to hitch-hike back in the late 50's and early 60's. His humor and good nature present throughout. :)

Bill Henry participated in the Polaris Actions as part of the Center for Nonviolent Action, founded by Bradford Lyttle. He was charged for climbing on top of US Navy submarines as they were first being armed with nuclear missiles at the Electric Boat Company in New London, CT. This was a sustained nonviolent direct action campaign which began with a march from the U.N. to New London, CT— including boats and others who assembled in solidarity and supported the action. The group leafletted and otherwise appealed to the employees directly, as well as taking small boats out on the water to be able to access the submarines and make it known: no one wants war. They proved that some are willing to put their own lives on the line to prevent WWIII from being started by any submarine commander with nuclear missile capability.

After serving a year for two concurrent charges, and maintaining a 90 hunger strike and a 54 day water strike, Bill Henry was released.
