"Sultans of Swing" was Dire Straits' debut single in 1978, and it announced Mark Knopfler as one of rock's great guitar stylists. The song was inspired by a real jazz band Knopfler saw playing to a nearly empty pub in London.

In an era of punk rock and disco, Knopfler's clean, fingerpicked Stratocaster sound was revolutionary. No distortion, no effects - just pure, articulate tone and impeccable technique. The song's extended guitar solo became instantly iconic.

The song reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and launched Dire Straits to international stardom. Knopfler's observation about musicians playing for the love of music, regardless of the audience, resonated with anyone who'd ever performed to an empty room.
