Why Zomato–Swiggy Gig Workers Took to the Streets on December 31?

While many of us were busy planning New Year celebrations, thousands of gig workers working with food delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy were forced to step onto the streets in protest.

The reasons are serious and systemic. The pressure of the 10-minute delivery model pushes riders to risk their lives by breaking traffic rules. Despite working 15–18 hours a day, many earn only ₹700–800, with no fixed days off, no provident fund, and no health or accident insurance. A single negative rating or an accident can result in instant ID deactivation—often without any hearing.

Adding to this is everyday humiliation: in many high-profile housing societies, delivery riders are denied lift access, parking spaces, and basic dignity, forcing them to climb multiple floors with heavy bags.

The irony is striking. India’s food delivery market is worth billions, yet the workers powering it have no minimum income guarantee. Their demands are basic and reasonable—end the 10-minute delivery pressure, ensure a minimum ₹35 per delivery, provide PF and insurance, and stop arbitrary ID blocking without due process.

Today they are on strike. Tomorrow, it could be any of us. This is not just about food delivery—it’s about dignity of labour and fair treatment in the gig economy.
Respect gig workers. Support accountability. Question the system, not the worker.
