Calories is the amount of energy which our body utilizes to perform its different tasks and functions.
  Whatever food we eat ultimately gives us carbohydrate, fat and protein and each of these give us a certain number of calories to be burnt by our body for example 1 gram of carbohydrate gives us 4 calories,1 gram of protein give us 4 calories while 1 gram of fat give us 9 calories.
   There is a formula known as harris-benedict formula to calculate the number of calories a person needs for everyday and this formula multiplies Basal metabolic rate with daily activity level.
   Basal metabolic rate is the number of calories our body uses at rest.
Now if eat more calories than what we require we gain weight and if we take less then we lose weight.
