Constant Flooding, But No Clean Water? Water Safety In Jakarta, Indonesia | CNA Correspondent

About 70 percent of Indonesia's population lacks access to clean water. For many, safe sources are distant, contaminated or expensive and water safety is a major public health concern. The government is taking steps to improve water quality. This includes a pollution eradication programme of the Ciliwung river in Jakarta which is to be completed by the end of this year. The plan aims to widen the river as part of efforts at flood management and to ensure water security in the Indonesian capital. Indonesia is also building more dams in the country as a source of low-carbon hydroelectric power, contributing to the clean and renewable energy mix in Indonesia. The government has a target to build a total of 61 dams by 2025.
