One of my most asked questions is “How to clean pen tips?”
The method I use is a piece of leather and white polishing compound, or Aluminium oxide as it’s also called.
I rub some of the compound onto the fluffy side of the leather, and then rub my pen tips through the compound using a circle motion.

This polishes off the carbon build up and doesn’t leave scratches.
