This was my first time working with digital art! Animating was even more challenging... There are some mistakes in the video, but I really hope you enjoy it!

In this video, I talk about the book, “my papa is a simple man”, by Philip Jaisohn's daughter, and reflect on its impacts and my thoughts about it.

This was for a competition. I had to cut some important information from the video because there was a deadline, and my inexperience with animation rushed me till the end.

Here's some chunks i didn’t mention in the video.
The coup Philip Jaisohn was involved in(the Gapsin Coup) was for social reform and the breaking of caste in Korea’s society. However, it failed because they failed to obtain citizens’ support, who were suspicious of the Japanese backing for the coup. Later, Jaisohn would come back to Korea after being called to support the cause again by his comrades from the coup. Learning from his lesson, he sought to change the people’s attitudes towards reform through the “Independent” newspaper, replacement of the Yeongeunmun (영은문), a door that welcomed the Ming Dynasty’s envoy, with the independence gate. He planted seeds of democracy, leading people to speak up and voice their opinions. This caused the king, feeling threatened of his position, ordered the deportation of Jaisohn back to america.

Not only was his overcoming of racial discrimination inspiring, but the fact that he did it all for the hopes of reforming Korea’s government was incredible and eye-opening.
