On one of the last really nice days of the summer, I went over to another tucked away, peaceful Queens neighborhood full of beautiful homes. This time it was the waterfront, northeastern edge of Queens where you’ll find the upscale, exclusive neighborhood of Douglas Manor. It’s bordered by Little Neck Bay to the west and north, and the neighborhood of Little Neck to the east. To the south is Douglaston. Douglas Manor is a small residential community known for its beautiful tree-lined streets, well-maintained lawns, and historic homes that date back to the early 20th century. It is also home to a small marina and park, providing residents with access to Little Neck Bay and the Long Island Sound. There’s a small circle of shops by the LIRR station as well, which adds to the charm and conveniences. I saw some renovation construction on big houses overlooking the water and lots of great spots to sit and take in the view. Everywhere I went in this area was well taken care of and quite clean. Always nice to see that!

Established in 1906, the affluent neighborhood of Douglas Manor in Queens was originally known as "Douglas Estate," after its founder, William Douglas. Douglas was a Scottish immigrant and successful businessman who purchased the area in the late 1800s. He established the "Douglas Manor and Improvement Company," which developed and sold the land, complete with landscaped streets, walkways and houses, to wealthy individuals looking for a suburban retreat from the city. Over time, the area became known as Douglas Manor and has remained one of Queens' most stunning and exclusive communities.

The area was first developed as a resort community around the turn of the 20th century. It was originally owned by James Douglas, a former New York City mayor, who purchased the land in the late 1800s. He intended to create a luxurious community for the wealthy and elite, complete with a yacht club, golf course, and grand homes. The area was designed to resemble an English village, with winding roads and architecturally distinctive homes. Today, Douglas Manor retains much of its original character and charm, and is known for its tree-lined streets and beautiful waterfront homes along Little Neck Bay.

Some notable residents who lived here over the years include Benny Goodman, Jack Kerouac and Danny Kaye.
