By Drew Bollea Concern over compound pharmacies and the Meningitis outbreak has continued to grow.The Tennessee Department of Health updated their numbers to show that 70 people in state have been sickened, nine have died.It's believed tainted medications from the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts are the cause.The pharmacy in New England was not accredited by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board, or PCAB, which means they didn't follow some of the strict regulations that a local compound center in Cleveland, Tennessee does.Compounding is the process of mixing drugs and chemicals to meet the specific needs of a patient. Cindy Smith with the Medical Center Compounding Pharmacy in Cleveland says they are constantly checking to keep work space clean."We actually test for bacteria and growth on our surfaces," said Smith, "we have to do glove finger tip testing."Compound pharmacists create these unique medications to match a patient's diagnosis."A true compounding pharmacy, especially those that go to the lengths to get accredited, they are interested in getting you the best quality product that they possibly can," said Smith.Which is why Smith is so curious about the tainted steroid injections from a pharmacy in Massachusetts."What in the world went wrong that could have precipitated so many infections," said Smith.Smith follows strict cleaning regulations set fourth by the PCAB and wants to ensure that her pharmacy's practices aren't in violation."As a compounder you just want to know why," said Smith, "so that we make sure that everything were following, were doing correctly so those same kind of things don't happen."Smith encourages anyone interested in compounds to simple ask."I just encourage people if they have questions, to talk to their pharmacist," said Smith.
