Описание к видео The Lost Episodes of Doom MIDI Pack - Myrmidon (E3M6)

One of the practices of the Doom community I've always been fond of is that, when presented with a classic WAD without a bespoke soundtrack, they'll band together to create an unofficial set of tracks to supplant the id Software originals. The Plutonia MIDI Pack was probably the first WAD I ever installed (of which I was tipped off to its existence by Davester2296's fantastic covers), and since then new MIDI packs have sprung up for basically every other 90s WAD, even to the point of re-scoring the other IWADs that already have original soundtracks just so you have new music to listen to if you happen to play a WAD that doesn't have replacements or just want to experience Doom II a little differently this time around.

A few months back, I was invited by some fellows behind the scenes of Nova IV to a Discord server named Mt. Erebus, which on top of several other things happened to be in the middle of working on one such MIDI pack for the Lost Episodes of Doom, a 1995 WAD I'd only heard of in passing up to this point. Given there was at the time exactly one slot free for E3M6, I gave the map a spin to see if I'd come up with anything. Given you're listening to this now, suffice to say I did.

The Lost Episodes doesn't have any MIDI replacements or even re-arrangements, so its E3M6 is by default scored by "On the Hunt", which by my reckoning is the single worst MIDI in Doom 1. Extremely short and repetitive to the point of grating after only a few repeats, questionable instrument usage that feels at odd with the rest of its IWAD's soundtrack, and contributes absolutely nothing to any map's atmosphere. I suppose it's a decent fit for the chaotic, FIREBLU-strewn Mt. Erebus, but it was wildly unsuitable for Somber Io Promenade's darker presentation and slower-burning action, so I knew right away I didn't want to make anything even remotely close.

The moments of TLEoD E3M6 that lingered most in my memory were of its large, nearly empty spaces and its dimly lit passageways, so I tried to write something that channelled that instead. It still ended up being pretty repetitive, something I explicitly wanted to avoid, but MIDI pack lead elf-alchemist seems to enjoy it, so I'll mark it as a success regardless.
