Rescuer Hawain scanned the colony for the entangled seal - but it seemed to have completely disappeared. Blending in with the rest, the seal was nearly impossible to spot. And what caused this potentially fatal situation? Not rope, not fishing line, not a plastic ring, this time it was a tiny piece of discarded clothing.Even natural or biodegradable fabric doesn’t break down nearly fast enough to prevent harm to wildlife. A stranded shirt, forgotten hoodie, or blown-away towel can become a noose around a seal’s neck, tightening with time, causing pain, infection, and eventually death.
