The current U.S. childhood immunization schedule has come under scrutiny under the leadership of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an anti-vaccine activist.

Among the children studied, on-time first-dose MMR vaccination rates declined from 79.9% in 2021 to 76.9% in 2024, with boys and children living in rural areas being slightly less likely to receive their MMR vaccines.

Delaying vaccines can lead to longer periods of being unprotected and an increased risk of outbreaks, especially for measles.
