Let’s step back to the late 1930s. India is still under British colonial rule. The Second World War is raging in Europe. Britain needs soldiers, money, and resources from India. But in return, Indians are demanding something big: freedom.
At this time, two major political forces dominate Indian politics. On one side, the Indian National Congress, led by leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, and others. They speak about independence for all Indians, regardless of religion. On the other side, the All-India Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The League argues that Muslims are a separate community, with their own culture, and need guarantees for their future.
