What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) first time watching movie reaction

The weekend I'm reacting to the film What's Eating Gilbert Grape. This was a total gem. Watching it back I got much more emotional that my initial reaction. I think I was initially too hard on Gilbert's mom. She seems like she has a lot of demons she's wrestling with. A very touching story about family and dealing with the hardships of life. I really enjoyed it. Y'all have some of the best suggestions.
The one question I later thought of was how on earth the kids weren't suspected of murder since there was no way to prove how mama died after the fire? However, it was such a good movie that I've chosen to ignore it and let myself enjoy the relationships its explores.
